Attorney Jessica D. Thomas graduated from Barry University School of Law and was sworn into the Florida Bar in 2011. She committed to and has made a significant difference in the legal profession. She has been a Pro Bono Guardian Ad Litem, speaking for the best interest of children who have been Abused, Abandoned or Neglected, since she started practicing. In fact, in 2018 she received the Elizabeth Susan Khoury Guardian Ad Litem Award of Excellence from the Orange County Legal Aid Society for her contributions.
This experience allows her to serve as a private GAL in several counties across Central Florida in an array of cases from domestic, insurance and even emancipation. She goes further in her support of fair access to the law for her community by dedicating 100s of hours to the Orange County Self Help Center since its opening. Her private boutique law firm has been in operation since 2015 servicing family law and adoption clients across several counties and in fact in 2019 and 2020 she was recognized by Super Lawyers for her law practice.
In 2017, she was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court’s Mediator Qualifications Discipline and Review Board with a special appointment to the Qualifications Inquiry Commission. The nexus between her statewide and local work is most evident though in her service to women’s issues. Attorney Thomas received a Florida Association for Women Lawyer’s Leader in the Law Award in 2018 for her service in her local FAWL Chapter.
She has been an active member in the Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers since beginning her legal career; first on the Board of Director as the Young Lawyer’s Chair and most recently in 2020 on the Board as the Public Relations Director. On a state level she was appointed as the Awards Chair for the Florida Association for Women Lawyers prior to being appointed to the FAWL Board of Directors as the Journal Editor for the 2020-2021 term.
Her service to women stretches beyond the legal community as she is the immediate Past President of the Central Florida Women’s Resource Center after serving several years on the board. All of these accolades were recognized with her receipt of The Black Women Handling Business Award as the 2019 Woman in the Law. It is evident that Attorney Thomas lives by one of her favorite mantras, “To Whom Much is Given, Much is Required.”
